Science: The Ultimate Skeptic

Scientists throw everything and the kitchen-sink at science in the hope of finding results that are not expected by science. In other words: they continuously work to disprove scientific orthodoxy.

Why? Because when you can demonstrate that the expected result according to established science is wrong, then you will have made a significant scientific discovery. This is the holy grail for every scientist. It guarantees fame, money and, not in the last place, true progress for humanity. All medicine, transport, construction, communication, food, energy, you name it, we owe it to the scientific method.

Science has at its core the prove-me-wrong-and-you-will-be-rewarded-for-eternity-incentive.

No other field has such a strong motivator as its fundamental driver.

For example: Einstein’s predictions that gravity bends light (gravitational lensing), disproved the then existing scientific ‘knowledge’ that light always travels in a straight line. This discovery led to new methods to look into the distant universe.

Science is the ultimate skeptic of science.

This makes climate-skeptics a strange breed, because they are not needed. Science doesn’t need non-scientists to be skeptical because scientists already are their own greatest skeptics. There is no greater trophy in science than to disprove previous scientific knowledge.
