The article doesn’t state that the US is good and kind. The article is about China and how it acts in relation to Russia’s invasion.
But just to clarify the difference: In the US there is a lot of debate, in the open, in Congress as well as in the media, about what the position of the US should be re. this invasion. Such debates are non-existent in Russia and China, because it’s illegal to question government.

Many Americans feel that the US was wrong invading Iraq and they can say so. They don’t get poisoned or thrown in jail. Humans do battle for power and for ideas. It’s not nice. It’s life. The US is very far from being a kind and moral country. But at least you can express your discontent about its government. Even if based on misinformation. You are even free to incite violence against your own government if you feel that’s going to give you more wealth and power. The irony is that if one succeeds in overthrowing government, then that’s also the end of this difference with China and Russia.

Choose between 2 evils, but know what you have. Once it’s gone you might not get it back.
