It might be worthwhile to check whether the catalyst has already started. I haven’t checked this, but the fact that subsequent IPCC reports have each time underestimated the speed of warming and its consequences (the policy pressure from the political right to "not overreact"), might be a result of glossing over this possibility. Certain changes, e.g. a few additional weeks of extreme temperatures at the poles and siberia can have set in motion irreversible melting, releasing enormous quantities of additional methane that will further speed up the warming process, releasing more methane in greater quantities and faster.
I hope it’s not the case, but I am afraid that if it is, then everyone in power will deny this reality, and rightfully so, because what’s the upside of panic and anger if nothing can be done anymore?
In the 60’s we knew that smoking was deadly. It took almost 60 years to get that sorted and still some 20% of adults smoke. In the 70’s we knew that burning fossil fuels causes global warming and today, 50 years later, we are burning more then ever. Humans will only halt their pleasures when each individual has no other option, ... and even then...smokers recovering from lung cancer often start smoking again...global warming? it will affect other people, not the owners of the fuel corporations, nor their employees...so they think...and hey, as long as I benefit, then who cares? Risk? Too complicated for the average Joe and Jane, thus they are easy to pull in any direction by those in power, whether it’s Brexit, fascism (US), tobacco, alcohol, eating meat, cars, consumption in general, and ... that global warming is a hoax, or not important, or that we can adapt.

It’s not a pretty idea, but it is possible that it’s too late already. Then the only hope may well be the invention of large-scale CO2-conversion technology.
